Sunday 2 November 2014
Crisp and sunny conditions greeted players and spectators alike at Tullow RFC last Sunday Morning with the pitches holding surprisingly firm despite heavy rain in the preceding days.
Another excellent turnout of 17 under 8's enabled us to split into two teams and play two matches each against a well drilled and enthusiastic opposition.
We continue to play a fast and mobile game with offloading and passing around the tackle area really improving week on week. Despite the narrower pitches our runners still found space and continually stretched our opponents with some superb individual moments of determined finishing.
Tullow have been focussing on rucking techniques in recent training sessions and that was evident at times with Wanderers players often standing by watching one team mate struggle to retain the ball against four or five opponents.
That said, the time we've spent on ripping and wrestling the ball really paid dividends with numerous turnovers and Tullow frequently being prevented from using their ball! Tackling continues to be a strength with an increasing number of players really embracing (and seemingly enjoying) the contact element.
A draw was probably a fair reflection of the matches but there was far more excitement and entertainment than the result suggests. Tries continue to roll in and I'm certain there will be many more before Christmas.
So back to training this week.... more passing sessions, bit more ripping and more tackling practice. I hope to dust off the tackling pads and introduce some rucking and mauling drills to build on from what we saw in Tullow and keep things exciting for the players (and keep the coaches fit)
