October 11th - Wicklow RFC U'8s v Wexford Wanderers U'8s
A contingent of 20 Under 8's enjoyed a great morning of free flowing and robust rugby in glorious conditions on Saturday. The healthy turn out allowed us to play two matches simultaneously ensuring that everyone (including both coaches) had a good run out on the pitch.
Soft ground underfoot didn't prevent the Wanderers pushing on from the first fixture of the season with tries coming thick and fast. Wicklow, fielding some strong and sizeable players, contributed equally to the points tally giving both sets of parents much to cheer and the children plenty of stories for the journey home!!
More vigorous contesting at the breakdown required some initial adjustment but both Wexford teams embraced it and fought for every ball. Again our elusive and pacey runners posed our opponents plenty of problems which will only increase as we build more support play into our game. A little more passing around or just before the tackle area will help us keep the ball alive and play to our strengths in future matches.
Wicklow hosted a great day of fair but tough rugby, excellent pitches and some lovely sandwiches at the end.
So.....we'll be working on our off loading and passing over the next few weeks and while tackling continues to be a collective strength, further practice will serve us well for the upcoming fixtures.
Any parents willing to help coach / hold tackle bags (or be tackled) strap on your boots, dust off your gum shield and please stick your hands up next weekend and help us develop this great little team.
