U8's Match report - Gorey Mini Blitz

Under 8s v Gorey 28th September 2014

Warm, dry and still weather heralded the opening fixture of 2014/15 as the Under-8's kicked off the new season on Sunday.

With well drilled and physically more imposing opponents, the 13 Wexford boys and girls that travelled away to Gorey, played their very first competitive 'full contact' match.

Building upon the handling and running skills developed through previous seasons of touch rugby and initial tackling training over the past few weeks, the Under -8s shocked their adversary's (and it has to be said, to some extent their coaches) with a passionate and exciting performance that drew roars of appreciation from home and away parents alike.

The individual and collective commitment to the tackle was a revelation and certainly belies their age and experience. Where one struggled with the size and strength of an opponent, two and three willingly supported. The execution and desire to tackle would I'm certain be the envy of the 1st XV coaching staff!!

New faces and old hands combined effectively to score 9 tries over two short matches. The points coming through a mix of elusive running and powerful direct charges with players revelling in breaking tackles and driving on through their opponents ranks.

All in all, an excellent start to the season. As ever, Gorey RFC proved formidable but fair opponents and provided a well organised and hugely supported event.
